I was on a forum of mangahelpers where discussion of Gantz's 251 chapter was busy and i realized why the Osaka team is so different from Tokyo. I think the biggest factor is Katou. If you look back on the manga you'll see Kurono who seemed to be the strongest wanting go back to Gantz and the killing and this would eventually only become stronger and make him go crazy. and in the buddha mission a man was almost crushed by the giant buddha and it was only katou that convinced the others to help the man. and even the teacher with the glasses who seemed to be a good guy changed after he obtained the power of that alien. It was only Katou that didn't become corrupted by power and in turn that rubbed off of Kurono and he learned to help others too which kept other Gantzers from going crazy. But now that he's gone the other gantzers don't really care about other people anymore, only themselves except for Katou who already is changing that Anzu girl
So what I think is that he guys from Osaka were all normal people but were corrupted by the things they'd seen in Gantz and the power they got. The tokyo team probably would've had a similar fate if it wasn't for Katou.

Corruption through sudden increase in ones own power, rather predictable trait, was actually going to have Lance in room 3 speak about it at some point... It's rather easy to understand, humans are weak. When they're given an advantage over everything else, they instantly think themselves invincible (which is also where the common indestructible teenager personality stems from), until they are faced with somthing that they can not defeat, they only grow more arogant. This ends up leading to their downfall.
In other terms, the main guys from Osaka have never been defeated, so their pride is what makes them go crazy and the suit is what corrupts their being, just wait until they face something they can not defeat...

I find it kind of strange that Nishi wasn't completely like that before he died in mission 2. He had more strategy and didn't kill anywhere near as many aliens as the Osakans. But now that he'd been brought back, he seems to have mellowed out a bit. Though, we haven't seen him at all this mission and may be up to his old tricks again.
I'm plannin' on having my character in East Project be kind of like Kurono in that he likes being able to prove himself in the missions. But(Assuming he lives) will ultimately be brought back from the edge by his soon-to-be girlfriend.

Oka...plays exactly like Nishi. He waits around for the right moment and then moves in. I like him. As for the rest of the Osaka team...
"Weakness" is truthfully just a lack of integrity. Weak people let their actions get dictated by their own fears. Being controlled by ones fears is cowardice. Courage is not the absence of fear...it is doing things in spite of ones fears. People are generally afraid of harm, both physical, and emotional, and their insecurities becoming exposed. However this is a choice people make. You can either be comfortable with yourself, and humbly admit to your own faults...or you can be uncomfortable with yourself, and deny your own faults. It is a choice people make. When you're not comfortable with yourself you need to validate yourself, through accomplishment, or action...or even the people around yourself. When you're weak you know the difference between right and wrong and still choose to do wrong...because you are afraid to do the right thing.
Let's take Reika. Reika is weak. She is weak because she defines herself by the people around her...a follower basically. Deep down...she does not like herself, so she defines herself by others. She even admits to being ugly on the inside. When she was around Kurono she defined herself by his virtues. That was why she so selflessly ressurected Tae. However as soon as Kurono died she was more concerned about her own skin, and rationalized leaving Kurono dead.
Now let's take Kurono. Kurono is strong because he does not define himself by the people around him. He acts in spite of his fear. When Kato was around he made a positive impression upon Kurono. Kato's morality really made a positive impression on Kurono. Kato was scared to do the right thing...both when saving the bum, and when preventing Kishimoto from being raped by the Yakuza. However he did those things anyways THis rubbed off on Kurono. However, after Kato died, Kurono still choose to save the weakest people so that more people would come back alive. Kurono is not perfect...he is human, but he is a far stronger person than Reika.
Yeah...he was afraid to help his classmates against the shorty aliens...but...he eventually choose to come back and ended up saving Tae.

Yeah...he was afraid to help his classmates against the shorty aliens...but...he eventually choose to come back and ended up saving Tae. very true indeed. but i do believe that Katou's moral is much stronger than kurono, as you probably had in mind too. If you look back on the dinosaur mission where kurono was kind of the savior, he was in a bit of leader position. He was the only experienced person there except for Izumi but he wasn't with the other people. So it was a kind of to his advantage to help the others because they looked up to him. This is also true for Tae. He already did feel something for her and it was in his advantage to save her (get sum booty). On the other side Katou. When saving the bum and Kishimoto he was going AGAINST his advantages and nobody thought he was very great when he saved them, except for kishimoto but he didn't have a thing for her at that moment. Also in this latest mission where he saved those old people he was going AGAINST the flow. Most gantzers were against helping the others.

Yeah, but remember: Katou wants to be like Kurono and Kurono wants to be like Katou ( He didn't want it on the begining, but started to feel like when he died )
That's because Katou is the "good heart" and Kurono is the "action boy". Katou always admired Kurono because he was always the best, that never lost, the fastest runner, most courageous one and such, but Katou is too afraid of the others. He is a tall and strong guy, but he cares too much for everybody and for the justice, that's why he can't die and is afraid of the others, but anyway, he almost always succeeded when he took some courage.
Katou wants to be more courageous like Kurono started been after the Tanaka Seijin mission ( He was courageous when was a kid, he lost his courage, but regained). the achieve the equilibrium. Kurono, when he started to help others, became flawless. On the Oni Alien Mission he was far beyond the "strongest" Gantzer there, he only died because he left the Gantz room.
That's how it works, Katou even changed Kurono, while he was trying to gain some courage. If at Osaka they had someone like Katou, maybe they could become guys like Kurono.
