(OOC: Hahahah! I missed out on the Limbo's mission run, so I think I'll pass on it since it's progressed that far. It wouldn't be fun, making up sketchy details with no real development in character. =P So I guess I'll just start this forum off. If anyone wants to do any cross roleplaying in the future, just ask. I used to live for compilations!)
Liquid fire cascaded down over the gaping hole in the side of the wreckage, cascading over the franticly screaming woman. The young man looked around hurried, as the inside of the aircraft filled rapidly with smoke. He felt something struggling in his arms. Oh, yeah. He had forgotten about the child for moment. Its screaming was starting to get on his nerves.
"Moooooommmmmmmyyyyyyyy!" The child screamed, watching the barely recogniseable form of the woman infront of them.
He shifted the child in his arms, locking him into place against his chest. Thin and chubby limbs pelted him and a stray arm knocked his headphones, causing one to slip off his ear. The full fury of the fire slowly encircling them roared in his ears.
It seemed like this was the end. There was no way out. He could hear the ambulance and fire engine sirens in the background, and a little hope bloomed within him. Yet, somehow he knew that they wouldn't be able to help him... They'd get to them too late. Come to that, he'd be late too. The late Vernand Legasse. He let out a bitter laugh.
This was so unfair. He was only twenty years old. He didn't deserve to die like this! He hadn't even found her yet... And he was sure he'd find her in britian! He was so close... and now his travels were going to end here... A pointless death, for a pointless person.
"Huh..." He mumbled, sweat dripping from his forehead as the flames encroached further.
It wasn't long ago, that everything had been nice and peaceful, and he was just begginning to analyse the rather attractive girl sitting beside him...
"-this is your captain speaking..."
Vernand opened his eyes and blinked a few times as the internal aircraft lights flickered on, illuminating the large cabin. A few other passengers groaned as they tried to fight for what little more sleep they could steal on the flight to Tokyo. He turned his head, rubbing his eyes as he took in his surroundings, realising that he had fallen asleep as soon as he had boarded and taken his seat in the jet. For the first time, he noticed the lady sitting beside him. He looked down and saw white knuckles gripping the armrests. He moved a hand slowly onto hers and clenched it gently.
"First time flying?" He whispered softly, a small smile forming on his lips.
The woman looked around and murmered, "Mhm...".
His smile turned into a grin as he reached over her with his free hand, raising the cover from the window next to her. He was a little bit annoyed that he never got the window seat much these days. He loved the view of clouds below him. Although, the fact that the lady was quite attractive more than made up for this.
"Don't be afraid. I've flown on more than fifty of these things. Statistically, you're more likely to die in a car accident, than you are in a plane." He said, flashing her a confident smile and gripping her hand a little more tightly. She looked into his eyes and he remembered to think confident. It was amazing how human's were akin to pack animals. If a strong and confident male was calm and collected, the rest of the herd would pick up the emotion and fly with it. In any case, the lady seemed to relax slightly.
"I know, I know. It's just that... Well, you hear rumors don't you? And with all those plane crash television shows on at the moment, it's kinda hard not to be afraid..." She stuttered nervously.
He flashed her another confident smile and released his grip on her hand, settling on patting it gently.
"There, there. You'll be fine. Just relax, close your eyes, and imagine you're lounging on a deck chair on the beach." He crooned, attempting at what he thought was a seductive voice. Really, it made him sound like he had a frog in his throat.
She nodded and closed her eyes slowly, her arms starting to tremble. The plane hit a patch of turbulence, causing the aircraft to rattle. Her eyes bolted open and she let loose a small shreik, looking embarrassed as a few other passengers turned to look at her. He rested his hand gently on hers again. His other arm reached down and pulled out a pair of headphones from the pocket of the seat infront of him. He passed them over and winked.
"Try listening to some music. I think we'll be going to land soon. Don't worry a bit, I'm here and I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Besides, you'd look cuter if you lost the scared face."
The girl looked affronted for a second until her eyes met his. She found herself blushing.
Vernand laid back in his chair and looked forward, at the screen on the back of the chair infront of him. The plane was going to land in about fifteen minutes. He was still unsure how he was going to find his way to the next terminal. His knowledge of the japanese language was quite rudimentry, and by rudimentry, all the japanese he knew he had learnt from anime and j-pop albums. He sighed and closed his eyes, falling into a gentle slumber. The lights of aircraft hadn't impeded him from getting any sleep. Not since about the fifth trip to another country.
An announcement followed by a jolt woke him up again. His eyes bolted open and he exhaled heavily. He could feel the girls hand, under his, trembling as if it were in an earthquake. He turned to look at her, and noticed how the colour had drained from her face. Over the loudspeaker, the announcement came again.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we are sorry to inform you that we are going to have to try an emergency landing as our front landing gear has reported an error to our system. We urge you all not to panic, as we have emergency vehicles stationed below. Our safety features, and procedures are rivalled by no other airline. Nontheless, we must ask you to brace yourself and follow the directions you were issued when you first boarded the aircraft. We thank you for flying with our company, and hope this caution will not stop you from choosing us in the future."
Vernand turned his head and looked at the girl.
"Don't worry, this happened one time back in Nebraska. They go all formal and paranoid like this over any little old thing. We'll be fine." He laughed.
He placed his hands over his head and got himself into the bracing position against the chair infront of him.
"C'mon. Let's have some fun, and pretend this is really dangerous!" He laughed jokingly. The girl shook her head and sat there motionless, still trembling.
Suit yourself, he thought and flipped his iPod's earphones on with his shoulders. He closed his eyes again. There was nothing to worry about. He remembered the time when a flight to Aukland had been delayed because one of the windscreen wipers was broken. He had a 3 hour stopover in Sydney while he was waiting. He remembered he hated Sydney. Then he remembered the time that the flight to boston was delayed for an hour because the navigation system was on the fritz. And even THEN they had boarded and flown in the plane while it was still acting up. This was just another lame excuse to show the public how safety consious they were, as a company. Nothing to worry about at all...
Oh, if only he'd known what was going to happen then. A stray pudgy finger caught him in the eye and he raised his arms to his face, dropping the small child. There was the sound of a small explosion and the shunt of metal grating against metal. He looked through the already smoke filled cabin for the child. There was another explosion and a row of seats slammed against each other, completely jumping the isle. There was a high pitched scream, terrifyingly cut short.
Vernand looked around him and watched a fastly approaching burning river heading towards him. He climbed up ontop of a seat and watched as it swept past. Flames scorched his jeans and he could feel the choking heat around him. It was only then, that he noticed the bodies around him.
He was standing on one in fact. The fat balding man he was standing on was surely not still alive. People that were alive had more head than that.
A deafening explosion rocked the aircraft. A cool breeze stirred the smoke in the cabin. He could see flashing lights through the smoke. They were here! They were close! He might live yet! The company might even let him have free flights for life! A pungent smell in the air made him look down. The man's legs had caught fire and Vernand hadn't even noticed as his own jeans had caught light. He flailed at them desperately, and tried yelling even though the smoke choked his lungs.
"I'M OVER HERE! C'MON! I'M OVER HERE! HELP! HURRY!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, his lungs heaving as he began to cough voilently.
It was getting unbearabley hot now. He looked down at the fire below him and leaped to the adjascent row, screaming as the incinerating flames licked his boots.
He thought he could see starlight through the smoke. He struggled his way through the carnage of bodies around him, dodging fire and waving the heavy grey darkness away from him. Yes! It was starlight! There was a small gap where the aircraft had split as it had crashed and tumbled. He might just be able to squeeze through!
Vernand forced his body through the narrow gap and managed to get his head into the open night air. The ground was just a few metres below him. He took a deep breath of the sweet night air, before shreiking loudly as the unseen area's of his body still in the plane felt like they were disolving. The pain was so unbearable that he could hardly even feel it. He managed to get his arms out, not noticing that the skin on his palms was bubbling and disfigured. He pushed voilently to get himself through the gap. His arm felt like they were on fire, and a red mist filled his vision.
He felt metal tear into his body as he suddenly slipped easily through the crack in the plane. His body clipped the side of the wing, before tumbling to a heap in the ground. He couldn't feel anything now, but could see the emergency crews rushing towards him. He eyes felt droopy as he watched them come closer and closer. Everything was starting to get blurry. He managed to move his head and look behind him. The aeroplane was completely ablaze now. There wouldn't be any chance of anyone else surviving that mess. He his numb hands reached down to his jeans to try and turn on his iPod. As soon as they reached there, there was a definate space where his legs were supposed to be. His legs were gone! What?! When did that happen?! His mind flashed back at the moment of ease, when his body came loose from the narrow gap in the plane.
Oh... He was really attached to his legs, too. His head managed it's painful turn back to the emergency crews. He let loose a course laugh. Hah! They were going to be too late! Then again, so was he.
So this is where my travels end, he thought. What a shame. He really wanted to see her face again too... Just one last time. Then he could die, he didn't care...
"Cie La Vie." Vernand whispered painfully, each word a struggle.
...And let go.
